About the Role
The Junior Data Engineer plays a vital role in the EthioChicken / Hatch Africa team. This position supports the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines that drive data-based decision-making across the organization. It is ideal for motivated individuals with a solid foundation in data concepts, eager to expand their expertise in cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform) and modern data engineering practices.
Working with senior data engineers, analysts, and software engineers, the Junior Data Engineer ensures the availability, accuracy, and performance of data pipelines that power business intelligence and analytics across Ethiopia and six other markets.
This position requires passion for solving data challenges, willingness to learn, and strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams. Experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, relational databases, and cloud platforms is preferred, with mentorship opportunities from experienced professionals.

Key Responsibilities
Data Pipeline Development & Support

Assist in designing, building, and optimizing ETL/ELT workflows using Azure (Data Factory, Synapse Analytics) and GCP (Big Query, Dataflow).

Support development and maintenance of data lakes, warehouses, and processing systems.

Monitor and troubleshoot pipelines for performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
Data Integration
-
Help integrate data from diverse sources (ERP systems, spreadsheets, mobile apps) into centralized platforms.

Maintain master data standards for consistency across markets.

Collaborate with reporting and functional teams to automate pipelines.
Performance & Documentation
-
Monitor data processes and escalate issues to senior engineers when needed.

Contribute to documenting workflows, data models, and processes.
-
Support data governance practices including quality, lineage, and access management.
Collaboration & Learning

Work with data analysts, scientists, and business teams to deliver reliable datasets.

Translate business needs into technical solutions under guidance.

Engage actively in training and mentorship to grow technical expertise.
Required Qualifications
-
Experience: 0–2 years in data engineering, data analysis, or related fields (internships and academic projects included).

Technical Skills:
-
Basic proficiency in Python or SQL.

Foundational knowledge of relational databases (Azure SQL Database, Big Query).

Familiarity with ETL/ELT processes, data modeling, or APIs.

Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, GCP) is a plus.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Collaboration: Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related fields (or equivalent practical experience).
Preferred Qualifications

Exposure to ETL/ELT tools (Azure Data Factory, Apache Airflow, Google Cloud Composer).

Basic knowledge of real-time data processing (Azure Stream Analytics, Google Cloud Dataflow).

Familiarity with visualization tools (Power BI, Looker Studio).

Knowledge of Business Central ERP or APIs (REST API, Django, FastAPI).

Interest in DevOps practices (CI/CD) or containerization (Docker).
